Filament-length-controlled elasticity in 3D fiber networks.

چکیده
We present a model for disordered 3D fiber networks to study their linear and nonlinear elasticity. In contrast to previous 2D models, these 3D networks with binary crosslinks are underconstrained with respect to fiber stretching elasticity, suggesting that bending may dominate their response. We find that such networks exhibit a bending-dominated elastic regime controlled by fiber length, as well as a crossover to a stretch-dominated regime for long fibers. Finally, by extending the model to the nonlinear regime, we show that these networks become intrinsically nonlinear with a vanishing linear response regime in the limit of flexible or long filaments.

Role of architecture in the elastic response of semiflexible polymer and fiber networks.
We study the elasticity of cross-linked networks of thermally fluctuating stiff polymers. As compared to their purely mechanical counterparts, it is shown that these thermal networks have a qualitatively different elastic response. By accounting for the entropic origin of the single-polymer elasticity, the networks acquire a strong susceptibility to polydispersity and structural randomness that...
متن کاملAdhesive contact in filaments
This paper studies the elastic contact in filaments induced by surface adhesion, which plays an important role in the mechanical response of fibrous materials (e.g., fiber friction, sliding, compression hysteresis, etc.). During the process, a simple 3D elastic contact model was proposed. The filaments were assumed to be uniform, smooth elastic cylinders, and the adhesive force between filament...
متن کاملThe Effect of Matrix Bond Failure on Stress Distribution in Short and Long Fibers of a Hybrid Composite Lamina
Abstract : The effect of a bond failure and its extent is studied on stress concentration in long fibers as well as stress distribution in short fibers and their surrounding matrix bays. The material is assumed to be a finite width hybrid composite lamina which is subjected to a tensile load of magnitude "P" at infinity. The surrounding matrix is assumed to take only shear (shear-lag theory). T...

This work details the development of a novel 3D (3-dimensional) printing system for use in the fabrication of complex biological tissue constructs. The printing system incorporates a microfluidic print head that uses coaxial flow focusing to generate, crosslink, and dispense a microfiber of sodium alginate, and a 3D positioning system to pattern the dispensed microfiber using fused filament fab...
متن کاملActin filament length tunes elasticity of flexibly cross-linked actin networks.
Networks of the cytoskeletal biopolymer actin cross-linked by the compliant protein filamin form soft gels that stiffen dramatically under shear stress. We demonstrate that the elasticity of these networks shows a strong dependence on the mean length of the actin polymers, unlike networks with small, rigid cross-links. This behavior is in agreement with a model of rigid filaments connected by m...
